ஆபிரகாம் தன் கண்களை ஏறெடுத்துப் பார்க்கும்போது, இதோ, பின்னாகப் புதரிலே தன் கொம்புகள் சிக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு ஆட்டுக்கடாவைக் கண்டான்; அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம் போய், கடாவைப்பிடித்து, அதைத் தன் குமாரனுக்குப் பதிலாகத் தகனபலியிட்டான்.
அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம் தன் வீட்டிலுள்ளவர்களில் வயதில் மூத்தவனும், தனக்கு உண்டான எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் அதிகாரியுமாகிய தன் ஊழியக்காரனை நோக்கி:
அப்பொழுது அந்த ஊழியக்காரன் தன் கையைத் தன் எஜமானாகிய ஆபிரகாமின் தொடையின்கீழ் வைத்து, இந்தக் காரியத்தைக்குறித்து அவனுக்கு ஆணையிட்டுக்கொடுத்தான்.
அப்பொழுது யாக்கோபு ராகேலின்மேல் கோபங்கொண்டு: தேவனல்லோ உன் கர்ப்பத்தை அடைத்திருக்கிறார், நான் தேவனோ என்றான்.
அதற்கு அவள்: நீ என் புருஷனை எடுத்துக்கொண்டது அற்பகாரியமா? என் குமாரனுடைய தூதாயீம் கனிகளையும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டுமோ என்றாள்; அதற்கு ராகேல்: உன் குமாரனுடைய தூதாயீம் கனிகளுக்கு ஈடாக இன்று இரவு அவர் உன்னோடே சயனிக்கட்டும் என்றாள்.
அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் தங்கள் கையிலிருந்த எல்லா அந்நிய தெய்வங்களையும், தங்கள் காதணிகளையும் யாக்கோபிடத்தில் கொடுத்தார்கள்; யாக்கோபு அவைகளைச் சீகேம் ஊர் அருகே இருந்த ஒரு கர்வாலி மரத்தின் கீழே புதைத்துப்போட்டான்.
