ਤਦ ਦਾਊਦ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਦਰਸਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਫ਼ਾੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਲੀਰੋ-ਲੀਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਊਦ ਨਾਲ ਜਿੰਨੇ ਵੀ ਹੋਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਸਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਰਊਬੇਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਯੂਸੁਫ਼ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਰਊਬੇਨ ਖੂਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਇਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਯੂਸੁਫ਼ ਉੱਥੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਰਊਬੇਨ ਨੇ ਗਮ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾੜ ਦਿੱਤੇ।

ਦਾਊਦ ਨੇ ਯੋਆਬ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਆਪਣੇ ਵਸਤਰ ਫ਼ਾੜ ਸੁੱਟੋ ਅਤੇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਦੇ ਵਸਤਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੋ। ਅਬਨੇਰ ਲਈ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰੋ।” ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਬਨੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਬਰੋਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਫ਼ਨਾਇਆ। ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਬਨੇਰ ਦੀ ਕਬਰ ਉੱਪਰ ਰੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਵੀ ਰੋਏ।

ਦਾਊਦ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾੜ ਸੁੱਟੇ ਅਤੇ ਭੌਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਲੰਮਾ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਵੀ ਆਪੋ-ਆਪਣੇ ਵਸਤਰ ਪਾੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਖਲੋ ਗਏ।

ਯਾਕੂਬ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਇੰਨਾ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਲੀਰੋ-ਲੀਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਯਾਕੂਬ ਨੇ ਸੋਗ ਦੇ ਖਾਸ ਬਸਤਰ ਪਹਿਨ ਲਏ। ਯਾਕੂਬ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਲੰਮਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੋਗ ਮਨਾਉਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ।

ਜਦੋਂ ਯਹੋਸ਼ੁਆ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਗਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾੜ ਲਏ। ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸੰਦੂਕ ਅੱਗੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਝੁਕ ਗਿਆ। ਯਹੋਸ਼ੁਆ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਤੀਕ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ। ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੱਟਾ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ। ਆਪਣਾ ਗਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ।
