וַיִּסַּ֨ע journeyed nāsaʿ מִשָּׁ֤ם from thence šām אַבְרָהָם֙ And Abraham ʾabrāhām אַ֣רְצָה country, ʾereṣ הַנֶּ֔גֶב toward the south negeb וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב and dwelled yāšab בֵּין between bên קָדֵ֖שׁ Kadesh qādēš וּבֵ֣ין bên שׁ֑וּר and Shur, šûr וַיָּ֖גָר and sojourned gûr בִּגְרָֽר׃ in Gerar. gĕrār

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar אַבְרָהָ֛ם And Abraham ʾabrāhām אֶל of ʾēl שָׂרָ֥ה Sarah śārâ אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ his wife, ʾiššâ אֲחֹ֣תִי my sister: ʾāḥôt הִ֑וא She hûʾ וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח sent, šālaḥ אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ and Abimelech ʾăbîmelek מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek גְּרָ֔ר of Gerar gĕrār וַיִּקַּ֖ח and took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt שָׂרָֽה׃ Sarah. śārâ

וַיָּבֹ֧א came bôʾ אֱלֹהִ֛ים But God ʾĕlōhîm אֶל to ʾēl אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ Abimelech ʾăbîmelek בַּֽחֲל֣וֹם in a dream ḥălôm הַלָּ֑יְלָה by night, layil וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ הִנְּךָ֥ to him, Behold, hinnē מֵת֙ thou a dead man, mût עַל for ʿal הָֽאִשָּׁ֣ה the woman ʾiššâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer לָקַ֔חְתָּ thou hast taken; lāqaḥ וְהִ֖וא for she hûʾ בְּעֻ֥לַת wife. bāʿal בָּֽעַל׃ a man's baʿal

וַֽאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ But Abimelech ʾăbîmelek לֹ֥א had not lōʾ קָרַ֖ב come near qārab אֵלֶ֑יהָ ʾēl וַיֹּאמַ֕ר her: and he said, ʾāmar אֲדֹנָ֕י Lord, ʾădōnāy הֲג֥וֹי nation? gôy גַּם also gam צַדִּ֖יק a righteous ṣaddîq תַּֽהֲרֹֽג׃ wilt thou slay hārag

הֲלֹ֨א not lōʾ ה֤וּא he hûʾ אָֽמַר Said ʾāmar לִי֙ אֲחֹ֣תִי my sister? ʾāḥôt הִ֔וא unto me, She hûʾ וְהִֽיא and she, hûʾ גַם even gam הִ֥וא she herself hûʾ אָֽמְרָ֖ה said, ʾāmar אָחִ֣י my brother: ʾāḥ ה֑וּא He hûʾ בְּתָם in the integrity tōm לְבָבִ֛י of my heart lēbāb וּבְנִקְיֹ֥ן and innocency niqqāyôn כַּפַּ֖י of my hands kap עָשִׂ֥יתִי have I done ʿāśâ זֹֽאת׃ this. zōt

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ said ʾāmar אֵלָ֨יו unto ʾēl הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים And God ʾĕlōhîm בַּֽחֲלֹ֗ם him in a dream, ḥălôm גַּ֣ם Yea, gam אָֽנֹכִ֤י I ʾānōkî יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ know yādaʿ כִּ֤י that kî בְתָם in the integrity tōm לְבָֽבְךָ֙ of thy heart; lēbāb עָשִׂ֣יתָ thou didst ʿāśâ זֹּ֔את this zōt וָֽאֶחְשֹׂ֧ךְ withheld ḥāśak גַּם also gam אָֽנֹכִ֛י for I ʾānōkî אֽוֹתְךָ֖ ʾēt מֵֽחֲטוֹ thee from sinning ḥāṭāʾ לִ֑י עַל ʿal כֵּ֥ן against me: therefore kēn לֹֽא I thee not lōʾ נְתַתִּ֖יךָ suffered nātan לִנְגֹּ֥עַ to touch nāgaʿ אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ her. ʾēl

וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ הָשֵׁ֤ב therefore restore šûb אֵֽשֶׁת wife; ʾiššâ הָאִישׁ֙ the man ʾîš כִּֽי for kî נָבִ֣יא a prophet, nābîʾ ה֔וּא he hûʾ וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל and he shall pray pālal בַּֽעַדְךָ֖ for thee, bĕʿad וֶֽחְיֵ֑ה and thou shalt live: ḥāyâ וְאִם and if ʾim אֵֽינְךָ֣ not, ʾayin מֵשִׁ֗יב thou restore šûb דַּ֚ע know yādaʿ כִּי thou that kî מ֣וֹת thou shalt surely mût תָּמ֔וּת die, mût אַתָּ֖ה thou, ʾattâ וְכָל and all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer לָֽךְ׃ thine.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם rose early šākam אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ Therefore Abimelech ʾăbîmelek בַּבֹּ֗קֶר in the morning, bōqer וַיִּקְרָא֙ and called qārāʾ לְכָל all kōl עֲבָדָ֔יו his servants, ʿebed וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר and told dābar אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֥ים things dābār הָאֵ֖לֶּה these ʾēlle בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם in their ears: ʾōzen וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ afraid. yārēʾ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים and the men ʾîš מְאֹֽד׃ were sore mĕʾōd

וַיִּקְרָ֨א called qārāʾ אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ Then Abimelech ʾăbîmelek לְאַבְרָהָ֗ם Abraham, ʾabrāhām וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֜וֹ מֶֽה unto him, What mâ עָשִׂ֤יתָ hast thou done ʿāśâ לָּ֙נוּ֙ וּמֶֽה unto us? and what mâ חָטָ֣אתִי have I offended ḥāṭāʾ לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי thee, that kî הֵבֵ֧אתָ thou hast brought bôʾ עָלַ֛י on ʿal וְעַל me and on ʿal מַמְלַכְתִּ֖י my kingdom mamlākâ חֲטָאָ֣ה sin? ḥăṭāʾâ גְדֹלָ֑ה a great gādôl מַֽעֲשִׂים֙ deeds maʿăśe אֲשֶׁ֣ר unto me that ʾăšer לֹא ought not lōʾ יֵֽעָשׂ֔וּ thou hast done ʿāśâ עָשִׂ֖יתָ to be done. ʿāśâ עִמָּדִֽי׃ ʿimmād

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ And Abimelech ʾăbîmelek אֶל unto ʾēl אַבְרָהָ֑ם Abraham, ʾabrāhām מָ֣ה What mâ רָאִ֔יתָ sawest thou, rāʾâ כִּ֥י that kî עָשִׂ֖יתָ thou hast done ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֥ר thing? dābār הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ said, ʾāmar אַבְרָהָ֔ם And Abraham ʾabrāhām כִּ֣י Because kî אָמַ֗רְתִּי I thought, ʾāmar רַ֚ק Surely raq אֵין not ʾayin יִרְאַ֣ת the fear yirʾâ אֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm בַּמָּק֖וֹם place; māqôm הַזֶּ֑ה in this ze וַֽהֲרָג֖וּנִי and they will slay me hārag עַל for ʿal דְּבַ֥ר sake. dābār אִשְׁתִּֽי׃ my wife's ʾiššâ

וַיְהִ֞י And it came to pass, hāyâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֧ר when ʾăšer הִתְע֣וּ caused me to wander tāʿâ אֹתִ֗י ʾēt אֱלֹהִים֮ God ʾĕlōhîm מִבֵּ֣ית house, bayit אָבִי֒ from my father's ʾāb וָֽאֹמַ֣ר that I said ʾāmar לָ֔הּ זֶ֣ה unto her, This ze חַסְדֵּ֔ךְ thy kindness ḥēsēd אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer תַּֽעֲשִׂ֖י thou shalt shew ʿāśâ עִמָּדִ֑י ʿimmād אֶ֤ל unto me; at ʾēl כָּל every kōl הַמָּקוֹם֙ place māqôm אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer נָב֣וֹא we shall come, bôʾ שָׁ֔מָּה whither šām אִמְרִי say ʾāmar לִ֖י אָחִ֥י my brother. ʾāḥ הֽוּא׃ of me, He hûʾ

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ And Abimelech ʾăbîmelek צֹ֣אן sheep, ṣōn וּבָקָ֗ר and oxen, bāqār וַֽעֲבָדִים֙ and menservants, ʿebed וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת and womenservants, šipḥâ וַיִּתֵּ֖ן and gave nātan לְאַבְרָהָ֑ם unto Abraham, ʾabrāhām וַיָּ֣שֶׁב and restored šûb ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת him ʾēt שָׂרָ֥ה Sarah śārâ אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ his wife. ʾiššâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ And Abimelech ʾăbîmelek הִנֵּ֥ה Behold, hinnē אַרְצִ֖י my land ʾereṣ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ before thee: pānîm בַּטּ֥וֹב where it pleaseth ṭôb בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ thee. ʿayin שֵֽׁב׃ dwell yāšab

וּלְשָׂרָ֣ה And unto Sarah śārâ אָמַ֗ר he said, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֨ה Behold, hinnē נָתַ֜תִּי I have given nātan אֶ֤לֶף a thousand ʾelep כֶּ֙סֶף֙ of silver: kesep לְאָחִ֔יךְ thy brother ʾāḥ הִנֵּ֤ה behold, hinnē הוּא he hûʾ לָךְ֙ כְּס֣וּת to thee a covering kĕsût עֵינַ֔יִם of the eyes, ʿayin לְכֹ֖ל unto all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אִתָּ֑ךְ with ʾēt וְאֵ֥ת thee, and with ʾēt כֹּ֖ל all kōl וְנֹכָֽחַת׃ thus she was reproved. yākaḥ

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל prayed pālal אַבְרָהָ֖ם So Abraham ʾabrāhām אֶל unto ʾēl הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים God: ʾĕlōhîm וַיִּרְפָּ֨א healed rāpāʾ אֱלֹהִ֜ים and God ʾĕlōhîm אֶת ʾēt אֲבִימֶ֧לֶךְ Abimelech, ʾăbîmelek וְאֶת ʾēt אִשְׁתּ֛וֹ and his wife, ʾiššâ וְאַמְהֹתָ֖יו and his maidservants; ʾāmâ וַיֵּלֵֽדוּ׃ and they bare yālad
