וְאַחַר֙ Now after ʾaḥar הַדְּבָרִ֣ים things, dābār הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle בְּמַלְכ֖וּת in the reign malkût אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֣סְתְּא of Artaxerxes ʾartaḥšaštāʾ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek פָּרָ֑ס of Persia, pāras עֶזְרָא֙ Ezra ʿezrāʾ בֶּן the son bēn שְׂרָיָ֔ה of Seraiah, śĕrāyâ בֶּן the son bēn עֲזַרְיָ֖ה of Azariah, ʿăzaryâ בֶּן the son bēn חִלְקִיָּֽה׃ of Hilkiah, ḥilqiyyâ

בֶּן The son bēn שַׁלּ֥וּם of Shallum, šallûm בֶּן the son bēn צָד֖וֹק of Zadok, ṣādôq בֶּן the son bēn אֲחִיטֽוּב׃ of Ahitub, ʾăḥîṭûb

בֶּן The son bēn אֲמַרְיָ֥ה of Amariah, ʾămaryâ בֶן the son bēn עֲזַרְיָ֖ה of Azariah, ʿăzaryâ בֶּן the son bēn מְרָיֽוֹת׃ of Meraioth, mĕrāyôt

בֶּן The son bēn זְרַֽחְיָ֥ה of Zerahiah, zĕraḥyâ בֶן the son bēn עֻזִּ֖י of Uzzi, ʿuzzî בֶּן the son bēn בֻּקִּֽי׃ of Bukki, buqqî

בֶּן The son bēn אֲבִישׁ֗וּעַ of Abishua, ʾăbîšûaʿ בֶּן the son bēn פִּֽינְחָס֙ of Phinehas, pînĕḥās בֶּן the son bēn אֶלְעָזָ֔ר of Eleazar, ʾelʿāzār בֶּן the son bēn אַֽהֲרֹ֥ן of Aaron ʾahărôn הַכֹּהֵ֖ן priest: kōhēn הָרֹֽאשׁ׃ the chief rōš

ה֤וּא This hûʾ עֶזְרָא֙ Ezra ʿezrāʾ עָלָ֣ה went up ʿālâ מִבָּבֶ֔ל from Babylon; bābel וְהֽוּא and he hûʾ סֹפֵ֤ר scribe sāpar מָהִיר֙ a ready māhîr בְּתוֹרַ֣ת in the law tôrâ מֹשֶׁ֔ה of Moses, mōše אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer נָתַ֥ן had given: nātan יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיִּתֶּן granted nātan ל֣וֹ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ and the king melek כְּיַד according to the hand yād יְהוָ֤ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהָיו֙ his God ʾĕlōhîm עָלָ֔יו upon him. ʿal כֹּ֖ל him all kōl בַּקָּֽשָׁתֽוֹ׃ his request, baqqāšâ

וַיַּֽעֲל֣וּ And there went up ʿālâ מִבְּנֵֽי of the children bēn יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וּמִן and of min הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֨ים the priests, kōhēn וְהַלְוִיִּ֜ם and the Levites, lēwiyyî וְהַמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֧ים and the singers, šîr וְהַשֹּֽׁעֲרִ֛ים and the porters, šôʿēr וְהַנְּתִינִ֖ים and the Nethinims, nātîn אֶל unto ʾēl יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim בִּשְׁנַת year šāne שֶׁ֖בַע in the seventh šebaʿ לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥סְתְּא of Artaxerxes ʾartaḥšaštāʾ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַיָּבֹ֥א And he came bôʾ יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם to Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ month, ḥōdeš הַֽחֲמִישִׁ֑י in the fifth ḥămîšî הִ֛יא which hûʾ שְׁנַ֥ת year šāne הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖ית in the seventh šĕbîʿî לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ of the king. melek

כִּ֗י For kî בְּאֶחָד֙ upon the first ʾeḥād לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ month ḥōdeš הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן of the first riʾšôn ה֣וּא he hûʾ יְסֻ֔ד began yĕsud הַֽמַּעֲלָ֖ה to go up maʿălâ מִבָּבֶ֑ל from Babylon, bābel וּבְאֶחָ֞ד and on the first ʾeḥād לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ month ḥōdeš הַֽחֲמִישִׁ֗י of the fifth ḥămîšî בָּ֚א came bôʾ אֶל he to ʾēl יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim כְּיַד hand yād אֱלֹהָ֖יו of his God ʾĕlōhîm הַטּוֹבָ֥ה according to the good ṭôb עָלָֽיו׃ upon him. ʿal

כִּ֤י For kî עֶזְרָא֙ Ezra ʿezrāʾ הֵכִ֣ין had prepared kûn לְבָב֔וֹ his heart lēbāb לִדְר֛וֹשׁ to seek dāraš אֶת ʾēt תּוֹרַ֥ת the law tôrâ יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְלַֽעֲשֹׂ֑ת and to do ʿāśâ וּלְלַמֵּ֥ד and to teach lāmad בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל in Israel yiśrāʾēl חֹ֥ק statutes ḥōq וּמִשְׁפָּֽט׃ and judgments. mišpāṭ

וְזֶ֣ה׀ Now this ze פַּרְשֶׁ֣גֶן the copy paršegen הַֽנִּשְׁתְּוָ֗ן of the letter ništĕwān אֲשֶׁ֤ר that ʾăšer נָתַן֙ gave nātan הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the king melek אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֔סְתְּא Artaxerxes ʾartaḥšaštāʾ לְעֶזְרָ֥א unto Ezra ʿezrāʾ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן the priest, kōhēn הַסֹּפֵ֑ר the scribe, sāpar סֹפֵ֞ר a scribe sāpar דִּבְרֵ֧י of the words dābār מִצְוֹת of the commandments miṣwâ יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְחֻקָּ֖יו and of his statutes ḥōq עַל to ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

אַ֨רְתַּחְשַׁ֔סְתְּא Artaxerxes, ʾartaḥšaštāʾ מֶ֖לֶךְ king melek מַלְכַיָּ֑א of kings, melek לְעֶזְרָ֣א unto Ezra ʿezrāʾ כָֽ֠הֲנָא the priest, kāhēn סָפַ֨ר a scribe sāpēr דָּתָ֜א of the law dāt דִּֽי of dî אֱלָ֧הּ the God ʾĕlāh שְׁמַיָּ֛א of heaven, šāmayin גְּמִ֖יר perfect gĕmar וּכְעֶֽנֶת׃ and at such a time. kĕʿenet

מִנִּי֮ I min שִׂ֣ים make śûm טְעֵם֒ a decree, ṭĕʿēm דִּ֣י that dî כָל all kōl מִתְנַדַּ֣ב which are minded of their own freewill nĕdab בְּמַלְכוּתִי֩ in my realm, malkû מִן they of min עַמָּ֨ה the people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְכָֽהֲנ֣וֹהִי and his priests kāhēn וְלֵֽוָיֵ֗א and Levites, lēwî לִמְהָ֧ךְ to go up hûk לִֽירוּשְׁלֶ֛ם to Jerusalem, yĕrûšālēm עִמָּ֖ךְ with thee. ʿim יְהָֽךְ׃ go hûk

כָּל as kōl קֳבֵ֗ל qĕbēl דִּי֩ Forasmuch dî מִן of min קֳדָ֨ם qŏdām מַלְכָּ֜א the king, melek וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת and of his seven šibʿâ יָֽעֲטֹ֙הִי֙ counsellers, yĕʿaṭ שְׁלִ֔יחַ thou art sent šĕlaḥ לְבַקָּרָ֥א to inquire bĕqar עַל concerning ʿal יְה֖וּד Judah yĕhûd וְלִֽירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם and Jerusalem, yĕrûšālēm בְּדָ֥ת according to the law dāt אֱלָהָ֖ךְ of thy God ʾĕlāh דִּ֥י which dî בִידָֽךְ׃ in thine hand; yad

וּלְהֵֽיבָלָ֖ה And to carry yĕbal כְּסַ֣ף the silver kĕsap וּדְהַ֑ב and gold, dĕhab דִּֽי which dî מַלְכָּ֣א the king melek וְיָֽעֲט֗וֹהִי and his counsellers yĕʿaṭ הִתְנַדַּ֙בוּ֙ have freely offered nĕdab לֶֽאֱלָ֣הּ unto the God ʾĕlāh יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl דִּ֥י whose dî בִֽירוּשְׁלֶ֖ם in Jerusalem, yĕrûšālēm מִשְׁכְּנֵֽהּ׃ habitation miškan

וְכֹל֙ And all kōl כְּסַ֣ף the silver kĕsap וּדְהַ֔ב and gold dĕhab דִּ֣י that dî תְהַשְׁכַּ֔ח thou canst find šĕkaḥ בְּכֹ֖ל in all kōl מְדִינַ֣ת the province mĕdînâ בָּבֶ֑ל of Babylon, babel עִם֩ with ʿim הִתְנַדָּב֨וּת the freewill offering nĕdab עַמָּ֤א of the people, ʿam וְכָֽהֲנַיָּא֙ and of the priests, kāhēn מִֽתְנַדְּבִ֔ין offering willingly nĕdab לְבֵ֥ית for the house bayit אֱלָֽהֲהֹ֖ם of their God ʾĕlāh דִּ֥י which dî בִירֽוּשְׁלֶֽם׃ in Jerusalem: yĕrûšālēm

כָּל That kōl קֳבֵ֣ל qĕbēl דְּנָה֩ with this dēn אָסְפַּ֨רְנָא speedily ʾosparnāʾ תִקְנֵ֜א thou mayest buy qĕnāʾ בְּכַסְפָּ֣א money kĕsap דְנָ֗ה dēn תּוֹרִ֤ין׀ bullocks, tôr דִּכְרִין֙ rams, dĕkar אִמְּרִ֔ין lambs, ʾimmar וּמִנְחָֽתְה֖וֹן with their meat offerings minḥâ וְנִסְכֵּיה֑וֹן and their drink offerings, nĕsak וּתְקָרֵ֣ב and offer qĕrēb הִמּ֔וֹ them himmô עַֽל upon ʿal מַדְבְּחָ֔ה the altar madbaḥ דִּ֛י of dî בֵּ֥ית the house bayit אֱלָֽהֲכֹ֖ם of your God ʾĕlāh דִּ֥י which dî בִירֽוּשְׁלֶֽם׃ in Jerusalem. yĕrûšālēm

וּמָ֣ה And whatsoever mâ דִי֩ dî עֲלָ֨יךְ ʿal וְעַל to thee, ʿal אֶחָ֜יךְ and to thy brethren, ʾaḥ יֵיטַ֗ב shall seem good yĕṭab בִּשְׁאָ֛ר with the rest šĕʾār כַּסְפָּ֥א of the silver kĕsap וְדַֽהֲבָ֖ה and the gold, dĕhab לְמֶעְבַּ֑ד to do ʿăbad כִּרְע֥וּת after the will rĕʿût אֱלָֽהֲכֹ֖ם of your God. ʾĕlāh תַּֽעַבְדֽוּן׃ that do ʿăbad

וּמָֽאנַיָּא֙ The vessels mān דִּֽי also that dî מִתְיַהֲבִ֣ין are given yĕhab לָ֔ךְ לְפָלְחָ֖ן thee for the service polḥān בֵּ֣ית of the house bayit אֱלָהָ֑ךְ of thy God, ʾĕlāh הַשְׁלֵ֕ם deliver šĕlam קֳדָ֖ם thou before qŏdām אֱלָ֥הּ the God ʾĕlāh יְרֽוּשְׁלֶֽם׃ of Jerusalem. yĕrûšālēm

וּשְׁאָ֗ר And whatsoever more šĕʾār חַשְׁחוּת֙ shall be needful ḥašḥût בֵּ֣ית for the house bayit אֱלָהָ֔ךְ of thy God, ʾĕlāh דִּ֥י which dî יִפֶּל thou shalt have occasion nĕpal לָ֖ךְ לְמִנְתַּ֑ן to bestow, nĕtan תִּנְתֵּ֕ן bestow nĕtan מִן out of min בֵּ֖ית house. bayit גִּנְזֵ֥י treasure gĕnaz מַלְכָּֽא׃ the king's melek

וּ֠מִנִּי And I, min אֲנָ֞ה I ʾănāʾ אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֤סְתְּא Artaxerxes ʾartaḥšaštāʾ מַלְכָּא֙ the king, melek שִׂ֣ים do make śûm טְעֵ֔ם a decree ṭĕʿēm לְכֹל֙ to all kōl גִּזַּֽבְרַיָּ֔א the treasurers gizbār דִּ֖י which dî בַּֽעֲבַ֣ר beyond ʿăbar נַֽהֲרָ֑ה the river, nĕhar דִּ֣י that dî כָל whatsoever kōl דִּ֣י dî יִ֠שְׁאֲלֶנְכוֹן shall require šĕʾēl עֶזְרָ֨א Ezra ʿezrāʾ כָהֲנָ֜ה the priest, kāhēn סָפַ֤ר the scribe sāpēr דָּתָא֙ of the law dāt דִּֽי of dî אֱלָ֣הּ the God ʾĕlāh שְׁמַיָּ֔א of heaven, šāmayin אָסְפַּ֖רְנָא speedily, ʾosparnāʾ יִתְעֲבִֽד׃ of you, it be done ʿăbad

עַד Unto ʿad כְּסַף֮ of silver, kĕsap כַּכְּרִ֣ין talents kikkēr מְאָה֒ an hundred mĕʾâ וְעַד and to ʿad חִנְטִין֙ of wheat, ḥinṭāʾ כֹּרִ֣ין measures kōr מְאָ֔ה an hundred mĕʾâ וְעַד and to ʿad חֲמַר֙ of wine, ḥămar בַּתִּ֣ין baths bat מְאָ֔ה an hundred mĕʾâ וְעַד and to ʿad בַּתִּ֥ין baths bat מְשַׁ֖ח of oil, mĕšaḥ מְאָ֑ה an hundred mĕʾâ וּמְלַ֖ח and salt mĕlaḥ דִּי dî לָ֥א without lāʾ כְתָֽב׃ prescribing kĕtāb

כָּל Whatsoever kōl דִּ֗י dî מִן min טַ֙עַם֙ is commanded by ṭaʿam אֱלָ֣הּ the God ʾĕlāh שְׁמַיָּ֔א of heaven, šāmayin יִתְעֲבֵד֙ done ʿăbad אַדְרַזְדָּ֔א let it be diligently ʾadrazdāʾ לְבֵ֖ית for the house bayit אֱלָ֣הּ of the God ʾĕlāh שְׁמַיָּ֑א of heaven: šāmayin דִּֽי for dî לְמָ֤ה why mâ לֶֽהֱוֵא֙ should there be hāwāʾ קְצַ֔ף wrath qĕṣap עַל against ʿal מַלְכ֥וּת the realm malkû מַלְכָּ֖א of the king melek וּבְנֽוֹהִי׃ and his sons? bēn

וּלְכֹ֣ם מְהֽוֹדְעִ֗ין Also we certify yĕdaʿ דִּ֣י you, that dî כָל touching any kōl כָּֽהֲנַיָּ֣א of the priests kāhēn וְ֠לֵֽוָיֵא and Levites, lēwî זַמָּ֨רַיָּ֤א singers, zammār תָרָֽעַיָּא֙ porters, tārāʿ נְתִ֣ינַיָּ֔א Nethinims, nĕtîn וּפָ֣לְחֵ֔י or ministers pĕlaḥ בֵּ֖ית house bayit אֱלָהָ֣א of God, ʾĕlāh דְנָ֑ה of this dēn מִנְדָּ֤ה toll, middâ בְלוֹ֙ tribute, bĕlô וַֽהֲלָ֔ךְ or custom, hălok לָ֥א it shall not lāʾ שַׁלִּ֖יט be lawful šallîṭ לְמִרְמֵ֥א to impose rĕmâ עֲלֵיהֹֽם׃ upon them. ʿal

וְאַ֣נְתְּ And thou, ʾantâ עֶזְרָ֗א Ezra, ʿezrāʾ כְּחָכְמַ֨ת after the wisdom ḥokmâ אֱלָהָ֤ךְ of thy God, ʾĕlāh דִּֽי that dî בִידָךְ֙ in thine hand, yad מֶ֣נִּי set mĕnāʾ שָֽׁפְטִ֞ין magistrates šĕpaṭ וְדַיָּנִ֗ין and judges, dayyān דִּי which dî לֶהֱוֺ֤ן may judge hāwāʾ דָּאְנִין֙ dîn לְכָל all kōl עַמָּה֙ the people ʿam דִּ֚י that dî בַּֽעֲבַ֣ר beyond ʿăbar נַֽהֲרָ֔ה the river, nĕhar לְכָל all kōl יָֽדְעֵ֖י such as know yĕdaʿ דָּתֵ֣י the laws dāt אֱלָהָ֑ךְ of thy God; ʾĕlāh וְדִ֧י ye them that dî לָ֦א not. lāʾ יָדַ֖ע and teach yĕdaʿ תְּהֽוֹדְעֽוּן׃ know yĕdaʿ

וְכָל And whosoever kōl דִּי dî לָא֩ not lāʾ לֶֽהֱוֵ֨א will hāwāʾ עָבֵ֜ד do ʿăbad דָּתָ֣א the law dāt דִֽי of dî אֱלָהָ֗ךְ thy God, ʾĕlāh וְדָתָא֙ and the law dāt דִּ֣י of dî מַלְכָּ֔א the king, melek אָסְפַּ֕רְנָא speedily ʾosparnāʾ דִּינָ֕ה let judgment dîn לֶֽהֱוֵ֥א be hāwāʾ מִתְעֲבֵ֖ד executed ʿăbad מִנֵּ֑הּ upon him, min הֵ֤ן whether hēn לְמוֹת֙ unto death, môt הֵ֣ן or hēn לִשְׁרֹשִׁ֔ו to banishment, šĕrōšû הֵן or hēn לַֽעֲנָ֥שׁ to confiscation ʿănaš נִכְסִ֖ין of goods, nĕkas וְלֶֽאֱסוּרִֽין׃ or to imprisonment. ʾĕsûr

בָּר֥וּךְ Blessed bārak יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm אֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ of our fathers, ʾāb אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer נָתַ֤ן hath put nātan כָּזֹאת֙ as this zōt בְּלֵ֣ב heart, lēb הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ in the king's melek לְפָאֵ֕ר to beautify pāʾar אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֥ית the house bayit יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ in Jerusalem: yĕrûšālaim

וְעָלַ֣י unto ʿal הִטָּה And hath extended nāṭâ חֶ֗סֶד mercy ḥēsēd לִפְנֵ֤י me before pānîm הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king, melek וְיֽוֹעֲצָ֔יו and his counsellers, yāʿaṣ וּלְכָל and before all kōl שָׂרֵ֥י princes. śar הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king's melek הַגִּבֹּרִ֑ים mighty gibbôr וַֽאֲנִ֣י And I ʾănî הִתְחַזַּ֗קְתִּי was strengthened ḥāzaq כְּיַד as the hand yād יְהוָ֤ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהַי֙ my God ʾĕlōhîm עָלַ֔י upon ʿal וָֽאֶקְבְּצָ֧ה me, and I gathered together qābaṣ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֛ל out of Israel yiśrāʾēl רָאשִׁ֖ים chief men rōš לַֽעֲל֥וֹת to go up ʿālâ עִמִּֽי׃ with me. ʿim
