וַיְהִ֣י Then there was hāyâ רָעָב֩ a famine rāʿāb בִּימֵ֨י in the days yôm דָוִ֜ד of David dāwid שָׁלֹ֣שׁ three šālôš שָׁנִ֗ים years, šāne שָׁנָה֙ year šāne אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar שָׁנָ֔ה year; šāne וַיְבַקֵּ֥שׁ inquired bāqaš דָּוִ֖ד and David dāwid אֶת ʾēt פְּנֵ֣י of pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord. yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר answered, ʾāmar יְהוָ֗ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל for ʾēl שָׁאוּל֙ Saul, šāʾûl וְאֶל and for ʾēl בֵּ֣ית house, bayit הַדָּמִ֔ים bloody dām עַל because ʿal אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer הֵמִ֖ית he slew mût אֶת ʾēt הַגִּבְעֹנִֽים׃ the Gibeonites. gibʿōnî

וַיִּקְרָ֥א called qārāʾ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ And the king melek לַגִּבְעֹנִ֖ים the Gibeonites, gibʿōnî וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם unto ʾēl וְהַגִּבְעֹנִ֞ים them; (now the Gibeonites gibʿōnî לֹ֣א not lōʾ מִבְּנֵ֧י of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl הֵ֗מָּה hēm כִּ֚י but kî אִם ʾim מִיֶּ֣תֶר of the remnant yeter הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י of the Amorites; ʾĕmōrî וּבְנֵ֤י and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl נִשְׁבְּע֣וּ had sworn šābaʿ לָהֶ֔ם hēm וַיְבַקֵּ֤שׁ sought bāqaš שָׁאוּל֙ unto them: and Saul šāʾûl לְהַכֹּתָ֔ם to slay nākâ בְּקַנֹּאת֥וֹ them in his zeal qānāʾ לִבְנֵֽי to the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וִֽיהוּדָֽה׃ and Judah.) yĕhûdâ

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִד֙ Wherefore David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl הַגִּבְעֹנִ֔ים the Gibeonites, gibʿōnî מָ֥ה What mâ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה shall I do ʿāśâ לָכֶ֑ם וּבַמָּ֣ה for you? and wherewith mâ אֲכַפֵּ֔ר shall I make the atonement, kāpar וּבָֽרְכ֖וּ that ye may bless bārak אֶת ʾēt נַֽחֲלַ֥ת the inheritance naḥălâ יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord? yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ said ʾāmar ל֣וֹ הַגִּבְעֹנִ֗ים And the Gibeonites gibʿōnî אֵֽין unto him, We will have no ʾayin לָ֜יּ כֶּ֤סֶף silver kesep וְזָהָב֙ nor gold zāhāb עִם of ʿim שָׁא֣וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְעִם nor of ʿim בֵּית֔וֹ his house; bayit וְאֵֽין neither ʾayin לָ֥נוּ אִ֖ישׁ any man ʾîš לְהָמִ֣ית for us shalt thou kill mût בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in Israel. yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֛אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar מָֽה What mâ אַתֶּ֥ם ye ʾattâ אֹֽמְרִ֖ים shall say, ʾāmar אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה will I do for you. ʿāśâ לָכֶֽם׃

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ And they answered ʾāmar אֶל ʾēl הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek הָאִישׁ֙ The man ʾîš אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer כִּלָּ֔נוּ consumed kālâ וַֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר us, and that ʾăšer דִּמָּה devised dāmâ לָ֑נוּ נִשְׁמַ֕דְנוּ against us we should be destroyed šāmad מֵֽהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב from remaining yāṣab בְּכָל in any kōl גְּבֻ֥ל of the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl

יֻנתַּן be delivered nātan לָ֜נוּ שִׁבְעָ֤ה Let seven šebaʿ אֲנָשִׁים֙ men ʾîš מִבָּנָ֔יו of his sons bēn וְהוֹקַֽעֲנוּם֙ unto us, and we will hang up yāqaʿ לַֽיהוָ֔ה them unto the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּגִבְעַ֥ת in Gibeah gibʿâ שָׁא֖וּל of Saul, šāʾûl בְּחִ֣יר did choose. bāḥîr יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ And the king melek אֲנִ֥י I ʾănî אֶתֵּֽן׃ will give nātan

וַיַּחְמֹ֣ל spared ḥāmal הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ But the king melek עַל ʿal מְפִיבֹ֖שֶׁת Mephibosheth, mĕpîbōšet בֶּן the son bēn יְהֽוֹנָתָ֣ן of Jonathan yĕhônātān בֶּן the son bēn שָׁא֑וּל of Saul, šāʾûl עַל because ʿal שְׁבֻעַ֤ת oath šĕbûʿâ יְהוָה֙ of the Lord's yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בֵּֽינֹתָ֔ם between bên בֵּ֣ין them, between bên דָּוִ֔ד David dāwid וּבֵ֖ין bên יְהֽוֹנָתָ֥ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān בֶּן the son bēn שָׁאֽוּל׃ of Saul. šāʾûl

וַיִּקַּ֣ח took lāqaḥ הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ But the king melek אֶת ʾēt שְׁ֠נֵי the two šĕnayim בְּנֵ֨י sons bēn רִצְפָּ֤ה of Rizpah riṣpâ בַת the daughter bat אַיָּה֙ of Aiah, ʾayyâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer יָֽלְדָ֣ה she bare yālad לְשָׁא֔וּל unto Saul, šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt אַרְמֹנִ֖י Armoni ʾarmōnî וְאֶת ʾēt מְפִבֹ֑שֶׁת and Mephibosheth; mĕpîbōšet וְאֶת ʾēt חֲמֵ֗שֶׁת and the five ḥāmēš בְּנֵי֙ sons bēn מִיכַ֣ל of Michal mîkāl בַּת the daughter bat שָׁא֔וּל of Saul, šāʾûl אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer יָֽלְדָ֛ה she brought up yālad לְעַדְרִיאֵ֥ל for Adriel ʿadrîʾēl בֶּן the son bēn בַּרְזִלַּ֖י of Barzillai barzillay הַמְּחֹֽלָתִֽי׃ the Meholathite: mĕḥōlātî

וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֞ם And he delivered nātan בְּיַ֣ד them into the hands yād הַגִּבְעֹנִ֗ים of the Gibeonites, gibʿōnî וַיֹּֽקִיעֻ֤ם and they hanged yāqaʿ בָּהָר֙ them in the hill har לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and they fell nāpal שְׁבַעְתָּ֖ים seven šebaʿ יָ֑חַד together, yaḥad וְהֵ֨םָּ hēm הֻֽמְת֜וּ and were put to death mût בִּימֵ֤י in the days yôm קָצִיר֙ of harvest, qāṣîr בָּרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים in the first riʾšôn תְחִלַּ֖ת in the beginning tĕḥillâ קְצִ֥יר harvest. qāṣîr שְׂעֹרִֽים׃ of barley śĕʿōrâ

וַתִּקַּ֣ח took lāqaḥ רִצְפָּה֩ And Rizpah riṣpâ בַת the daughter bat אַיָּ֨ה of Aiah ʾayyâ אֶת ʾēt הַשַּׂ֜ק sackcloth, śaq וַתַּטֵּ֨הוּ and spread nāṭâ לָ֤הּ אֶל it for her upon ʾēl הַצּוּר֙ the rock, ṣûr מִתְּחִלַּ֣ת from the beginning tĕḥillâ קָצִ֔יר of harvest qāṣîr עַ֛ד until ʿad נִתַּךְ dropped nātak מַ֥יִם water mayim עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם upon ʿal מִן them out of min הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם heaven, šāmayim וְלֹֽא neither lōʾ נָתְנָה֩ and suffered nātan ע֨וֹף the birds ʿôp הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם of the air šāmayim לָנ֤וּחַ to rest nûaḥ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ on ʿal יוֹמָ֔ם them by day, yômām וְאֶת ʾēt חַיַּ֥ת nor the beasts ḥay הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה of the field śāde לָֽיְלָה׃ by night. layil

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד And it was told nāgad לְדָוִ֑ד David dāwid אֵ֧ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר what ʾăšer עָֽשְׂתָ֛ה had done. ʿāśâ רִצְפָּ֥ה Rizpah riṣpâ בַת the daughter bat אַיָּ֖ה of Aiah, ʾayyâ פִּלֶ֥גֶשׁ the concubine pîlegeš שָׁאֽוּל׃ of Saul, šāʾûl

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ went hālak דָּוִ֗ד And David dāwid וַיִּקַּ֞ח and took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt עַצְמ֤וֹת the bones ʿeṣem שָׁאוּל֙ of Saul šāʾûl וְאֶת from ʾēt עַצְמוֹת֙ and the bones ʿeṣem יְהֽוֹנָתָ֣ן of Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנ֔וֹ his son bēn מֵאֵ֕ת ʾēt בַּֽעֲלֵ֖י the men baʿal יָבֵ֣ישׁ of Jabesh-gilead, yābēš גִּלְעָ֑ד gilʿād אֲשֶׁר֩ which ʾăšer גָּֽנְב֨וּ had stolen gānab אֹתָ֜ם ʾēt מֵֽרְחֹ֣ב them from the street rĕḥōb בֵּֽית שַׁ֗ן of Beth-shan, bêt šĕʾān אֲשֶׁ֨ר where ʾăšer תְּלָוּ֥ם had hanged tālāʾ שָׁ֙םָּ֙ šām הפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines pĕlištî בְּי֨וֹם them, when yôm הַכּ֧וֹת had slain nākâ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֛ים the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת ʾēt שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl בַּגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ in Gilboa: gilbōaʿ

וַיַּ֤עַל And he brought up ʿālâ מִשָּׁם֙ from thence šām אֶת ʾēt עַצְמ֣וֹת the bones ʿeṣem שָׁא֔וּל of Saul šāʾûl וְאֶת ʾēt עַצְמ֖וֹת and the bones ʿeṣem יְהֽוֹנָתָ֣ן of Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנ֑וֹ his son; bēn וַיַּ֣אַסְפ֔וּ and they gathered ʾāsap אֶת ʾēt עַצְמ֖וֹת the bones ʿeṣem הַמּֽוּקָעִֽים׃ of them that were hanged. yāqaʿ

וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ buried qābar אֶת And ʾēt עַצְמוֹת the bones ʿeṣem שָׁא֣וּל of Saul šāʾûl וִיהוֹנָֽתָן and Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּ֠נוֹ his son bēn בְּאֶ֨רֶץ they in the country ʾereṣ בִּנְיָמִ֜ן of Benjamin binyāmîn בְּצֵלָ֗ע in Zelah, ṣelaʿ בְּקֶ֙בֶר֙ in the sepulchre qeber קִ֣ישׁ of Kish qîš אָבִ֔יו his father: ʾāb וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ and they performed ʿāśâ כֹּ֥ל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer צִוָּ֖ה commanded. ṣāwâ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king melek וַיֵּֽעָתֵ֧ר was intreated ʿātar אֱלֹהִ֛ים God ʾĕlōhîm לָאָ֖רֶץ for the land. ʾereṣ אַֽחֲרֵי And after that ʾaḥar כֵֽן׃ kēn

וַתְּהִי had hāyâ ע֧וֹד ʿôd מִלְחָמָ֛ה yet war milḥāmâ לַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים Moreover the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת again with ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיֵּ֨רֶד went down, yārad דָּוִ֜ד and David dāwid וַֽעֲבָדָ֥יו and his servants ʿebed עִמּ֛וֹ with ʿim וַיִּלָּֽחֲמ֥וּ him, and fought against lāḥam אֶת ʾēt פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים the Philistines: pĕlištî וַיָּ֥עַף waxed faint. ʿûp דָּוִֽד׃ and David dāwid

וְיִשְׁבִּ֨ו בְּנֹ֜ב And Ishbi-benob, yišbô bĕnōb אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ which ʾăšer בִּֽילִידֵ֣י of the sons yālîd הָֽרָפָ֗ה of the giant, rāpāʾ וּמִשְׁקַ֤ל the weight mišqāl קֵינוֹ֙ of whose spear qayin שְׁלֹ֤שׁ three šālôš מֵאוֹת֙ hundred mēʾâ מִשְׁקַ֣ל in weight, mišqāl נְחֹ֔שֶׁת of brass nĕḥōšet וְה֖וּא he hûʾ חָג֣וּר being girded ḥāgar חֲדָשָׁ֑ה with a new ḥādoš וַיֹּ֖אמֶר thought ʾāmar לְהַכּ֥וֹת to have slain nākâ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִֽד׃ David. dāwid

וַיַּֽעֲזָר succoured ʿāzar לוֹ֙ אֲבִישַׁ֣י But Abishai ʾăbîšay בֶּן the son bēn צְרוּיָ֔ה of Zeruiah ṣĕrûyâ וַיַּ֥ךְ him, and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י the Philistine, pĕlištî וַיְמִתֵ֑הוּ and killed mût אָ֣ז him. Then ʾāz נִשְׁבְּעוּ֩ sware šābaʿ אַנְשֵׁי the men ʾîš דָוִ֨ד of David dāwid ל֜וֹ לֵאמֹ֗ר unto him, saying, ʾāmar לֹֽא no lōʾ תֵצֵ֨א Thou shalt go yāṣāʾ ע֤וֹד more ʿôd אִתָּ֙נוּ֙ ʾēt לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה out with us to battle, milḥāmâ וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ תְכַבֶּ֖ה that thou quench kābâ אֶת ʾēt נֵ֥ר the light nîr יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ אַֽחֲרֵי after this, ʾaḥar כֵ֔ן kēn וַתְּהִי that there was hāyâ ע֧וֹד again ʿôd הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה a battle milḥāmâ בְּג֖וֹב at Gob: gōb עִם with ʿim פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines pĕlištî אָ֣ז then ʾāz הִכָּ֗ה slew nākâ סִבְּכַי֙ Sibbechai sibbĕkay הַחֻ֣שָׁתִ֔י the Hushathite ḥušātî אֶת ʾēt סַ֕ף Saph, sap אֲשֶׁ֖ר which ʾăšer בִּֽילִדֵ֥י of the sons yālîd הָֽרָפָֽה׃ of the giant. rāpāʾ

וַתְּהִי And there was hāyâ ע֧וֹד again ʿôd הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה a battle milḥāmâ בְּג֖וֹב in Gob gōb עִם with ʿim פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיַּ֡ךְ slew nākâ אֶלְחָנָן֩ where Elhanan ʾelḥānān בֶּן the son bēn יַעְרֵ֨י אֹֽרְגִ֜ים of Jaare-oregim, yaʿărê ʾōrĕgîm בֵּ֣ית הַלַּחְמִ֗י a Bethlehemite, bêt hallaḥmî אֵ֚ת ʾēt גָּלְיָ֣ת Goliath golyat הַגִּתִּ֔י the Gittite, gittî וְעֵ֣ץ the staff ʿēṣ חֲנִית֔וֹ of whose spear ḥănît כִּמְנ֖וֹר beam. mānôr אֹֽרְגִֽים׃ like a weaver's ʾārag

וַתְּהִי And there was hāyâ ע֥וֹד yet ʿôd מִלְחָמָ֖ה a battle milḥāmâ בְּגַ֑ת in Gath, gat וַיְהִ֣י׀ where was hāyâ אִ֣ישׁ a man ʾîš מָד֗יֹן of stature, mādôn וְאֶצְבְּעֹ֣ת fingers, ʾeṣbaʿ יָדָיו֩ that had on every hand yād וְאֶצְבְּעֹ֨ת toes, ʾeṣbaʿ רַגְלָ֜יו and on every foot regel שֵׁ֣שׁ six šēš וָשֵׁ֗שׁ six šēš עֶשְׂרִ֤ים and twenty ʿeśrîm וְאַרְבַּע֙ four ʾarbaʿ מִסְפָּ֔ר in number; mispār וְגַם also gam ה֖וּא and he hûʾ יֻלַּ֥ד was born yālad לְהָֽרָפָֽה׃ to the giant. rāpāʾ

וַיְחָרֵ֖ף And when he defied ḥārap אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּכֵּ֙הוּ֙ slew him. nākâ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן Jonathan yĕhônātān בֶּן the son bēn שִׁמְעָ֖י of Shimea šimʿāʾ אֲחִ֥י the brother ʾāḥ דָוִֽד׃ of David dāwid

אֶת ʾēt אַרְבַּ֥עַת four ʾarbaʿ אֵ֛לֶּה These ʾēlle יֻלְּד֥וּ were born yālad לְהָֽרָפָ֖ה to the giant rāpāʾ בְּגַ֑ת in Gath, gat וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and fell nāpal בְיַד by the hand yād דָּוִ֖ד of David, dāwid וּבְיַ֥ד and by the hand yād עֲבָדָֽיו׃ of his servants. ʿebed
