ਤਦ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਨੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਸੌਂਹ ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਸੌਂਹ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ।”

“ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗਲਤ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗਲਤ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਬੰਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਅਸਤਸਨਾ 18:10
ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਜਗਵੇਦੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਾੜਕੇ ਬਲੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉਣੀਆਂ। ਕਿਸੇ ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੂਤ-ਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਕੇ ਇਹ ਜਾਨਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਕਿ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਵਾਪਰੇਗਾ।

ਮੈਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਸੌਂਹ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਕਿ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਪਾਪ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ।” ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਬੋਲਿਆ।

ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਨੇ ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੌਂਹ ਖਾਕੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੌਂਹ, ਦਾਊਦ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।”

ਉਸ ਔਰਤ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੈਂ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ! ਯਹੋਵਾਹ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਲਾਕੇ ਕਤਲ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਦੇਵੋ। ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾ ਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਵਚਨ ਦਿਓ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇਵੋਂਗੇ।” ਦਾਊਦ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਸੌਂਹ! ਤੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਲ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਡਿੱਗੇਗਾ।”

ਫ਼ਿਰ, ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਸੌਂਹ ਖਾਕੇ ਇਹ ਆਖਦਿਆਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।”
