ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਦਾ ਹਮਲਾ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਉਸ ਨੌਜੁਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਚੱਲ ਵਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਪਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਚੱਲੀਏ।” ਪਰ ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਉ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਦੱਸਿਆ।

1 Samuel 14:4
ਉਸ ਰਾਹ ਦੇ ਦੋਨੋਂ ਪਾਸੇ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਉੱਚੀਆਂ ਚੱਟਾਨਾਂ ਸਨ। ਯੋਨਾਥਾਨ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਰਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਸੋਚੀ। ਉਸ ਰਾਹ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਚੱਟਾਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੋਸੇਸ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਉਂ ਸਨਹ ਸੀ।

1 Samuel 13:2
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 30,000 ਆਦਮੀ ਚੁਣੇ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 2,000 ਆਦਮੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਕਮਾਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਬੈਤੇਲ ਦੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ 1,000 ਆਦਮੀ ਯੋਨਾਥਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਨਯਾਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਗਿਬਆਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹੇ।

ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਲੜਨ ਲਈ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ 3,000 ਰੱਥ ਅਤੇ 6,000 ਘੁੜ-ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਇੰਨੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਕਣ ਹੋਣ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਿਕਮਾਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੇਰਾ ਲਾਇਆ। (ਮਿਕਮਾਸ਼ ਬੈਤਆਵਨ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਬ ਵੱਲ ਹੈ।)

ਇੰਝ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ, ਦਾਊਦ ਇੱਕ ਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਬੈਤਲਹਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ।
