1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which `is' before thee,यदि तिमी कुनै अधिकृतसित भोजनमा बसेको छौ भने याद राख तिमी कसको अघि छौ।

2 And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou `art' a man of appetite.तिमी धेरै खाने गर्थ्यौ भने पनि तिमीले आफूलाई नियन्त्रणमा राख्नु पर्छ।

3 Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it `is' lying food.उसको स्वादिलो भोजनद्वारा परिक्षीत नहोउ किनभने उसको भोजन छलपूर्ण हुन्छ।-7-

4 Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.धनी बन्न चेष्टा गर्दै आफैंलाई नथकाऊ। यदि तिमी बुद्धिमानी छौ भने तिमीले यस्तो गर्न बन्द गर।

5 For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.धन-सम्पत्ति हेर्दा-हेर्दा शेष भएर जान्छ। धन सम्पत्ति आफ्नो पंखेटा फैलाएर उडेर जाने चरा झैं आकाशमा जान्छ।-8-

6 Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,एउटा कञ्जूस मानिस सित भोजन नखाऊ। उसको घरमा पकाएको स्वादिलो भोजनको इच्छा नगर।

7 For as he hath thought in his soul, so `is' he, `Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart `is' not with thee.त्यो यस्तो मानिस हो जो आफ्नो भोजनको मोल लगाई रहन्छ। तिमीलाई त भन्छ, “तिमी खाऊ, मस्त भई खाऊ,” तर त्यो उसको मनभित्रबाट भनेको होइन।

8 Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that `are' sweet.तिमीले अलिकति खाएको पनि उकेलि दिने छौ अनि तिमीले उसलाई गरेका प्रशंसाहरू व्यर्थ भएर जान्छन्।-9-

9 In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.मूर्खले तिम्रा ज्ञानी वचनहरूलाई घृणा गर्छ, मूर्खसित कुरा नगर।-10-

10 Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,जमीनमा पुरानो सिमाना भए त्यसलाई सार्ने प्रयास नगर। टुहुरा-टुहुरीहरूको जमीन जबरजस्ती दखल नगर।

11 For their Redeemer `is' strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.किनभने परमप्रभु ती अनाथहरूको शक्तिशाली संरक्षक हुनु हुन्छ जसले अनाथहरूको पक्षमा तिमीसित अदालतमा लडनु हुन्छ।-11-

12 Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.तिमीहरूको विचारलाई अनुशासनमा लगाऊ अनि ज्ञानको शिक्षाहरूमा ध्यान देऊ।-12-

13 Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.आवश्यकता अनुसार नानीलाई सधैं सजाय देऊ। सजाय दिदाँ त्यो मर्दैन।

14 Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.यदि तिमीले उसलाई सजाय दियौ भने, तिमीले उसलाई चिहानबाट रक्षा गर्ने छौ।-13-

15 My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,हे मेरो छोरो, तिमी बुद्धिमान् भयौ भने म खुशी हुनेछु।

16 And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.यदि तिमीले सही कुराहरू गरेको सुन्न पाए म हृदयबाट नै खुशी हुने थिँए।

17 Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But -- in the fear of Jehovah all the day.पापीहरूको ईर्ष्या नगर। तर सबै समयमा, परमप्रभुलाई सम्मान गर।

18 For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.तब तिम्रो एउटा भविष्य हुन्छ, तिम्रो आशा कहिल्यै हराउने छैन।-15-

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,मेरो छोरो, सुन र ज्ञानी बन! सधैं सही बाटोमा हिडने कुरा ख्याल गर।

20 Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,धेरै भोजन गर्ने तथा दाखरस पिउँने मानिस सित मित्रता नराख।

21 For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.जुन मानिसले धेरै खान्छ अनि धेरै पिउँछ भने गरीब हुन्छ। उसको उडाइले उसलाई थोत्रो लुगा लगाउने बनाई दिन्छ।-19-

22 Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.तिम्रा बाबु जसले तिमीलाई जीवन दिए उनको बचनहरू सुन। तिम्री आमा भनेर उनलाई हेला नगर।

23 Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,सत्यतालाई किन अनि यसलाई नबेच। ज्ञान, अनुशासन अनि समझ शक्तिलाई पनि किन।

24 The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.इमान्दार मानिसका बाबु अति सुखी मानिस हुन। यदि कुनै मानिसको बुद्धिमान नानी छ, भने त्यस नानीले घरमा खुशीयाली ल्याउँछ।

25 Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.यसर्थ तिम्रा आमा-बाबु तिमी सित खुशी भई बसुन्। तिम्री आमाले आनन्द पाउन।-17-

26 Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.हे मेरो छोरो! म जे भन्दैछु अलिक ध्यान दिएर सुन। मैले भनेका कुराहरू स्वीकार गर।

27 For a harlot `is' a deep ditch, And a strange woman `is' a strait pit.एउटी वेश्या एक गहिरो खाडल जस्तो हो एक व्यभिचारिणी स्त्री, एक साँधुरो इनार जस्तो हो।

28 She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.एउटा खराब आइमाई डाँकुले झैं बाटो ढुकेर वस्छे अनि धेरै मानिसहरूलाई अविश्वासी बनाउँछे।-18-

29 Who hath wo? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?कसको दयनीयता छ? कसको दुःख छ? को कष्टमा डुबेकोछ? को झगडा टंटामा फँसेकोछ? बिना कारण कसले चोट पाएको छ? कसको आँखा राता भएका छन्?

30 Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.तिनीहरू ती हुन् जो रात दिन दाखरसको सेवनमा बिताउछन अनि जो मिश्रित मद्य चाख्न भोजनहरूमा जान्छन्।

31 See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.दाखरसद्वारा दाखको रातो रंगद्वारा यसको प्याला भित्रको चमकद्वारा सम्मोहित नहोऊ। यो बिना अवरोध घाँटीबाट तल स्वाट्टै जान्छ।

32 Its latter end -- as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.तर अन्तमा यसले सर्पले झैं डस्छ गोप्य विष भएको विषालु सर्पले झैं डस्छ गोप्य विष भएको विषालु सर्पले झैं डस्छ।

33 Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.तिमीले विचित्र चीजहरू देख्ने छौ। भ्रान्त विचार, तिम्रो मनमा कूद्ने छन्।

34 And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.तिमीलाई यस्तो लाग्नेछ महासमुद्रको माथिल्लो सतहमा सुतिरहेछौ, तिमी जहाज माथि सुतिरहेछौ।

35 `They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake -- I seek it yet again!'तिमी भन्छौ तिनीहरूले मलाई हिर्काए मैले अनुभव गरिनँ, तिनीहरूले पिटे तर मलाई थाहा भएन। म कति वेला ब्यूँझन्छु? म जान्छु अनि अर्का मद्य पिउँछु।-19-
