Mark 7:3
ફરોશીઓ અને બધા યહૂદીઓ તેમની વિશિષ્ટ રીતે હાથ ધોયા વિના કદાપિ ખાતા નથી. તેઓ તેમની અગાઉ થઈ ગયેલા મહાન લોકોએ આપેલા ઉપદેશને અનુસરવા આ કરતા.

જે અર્થહીન હોય તેવા વ્યર્થ ખ્યાલો કે શબ્દો વડે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ તમને દોરે નહિ તે અંગે સાવધ રહો. તેવા ખ્યાલો ખ્રિસ્ત તરફથી નહિ, પરંતુ લોકો તરફથી આવતા હોય છે.

“તારા શિષ્યો આપણા પૂર્વજોએ નક્કી કરેલા રીતરિવાજોનું પાલન કેમ નથી કરતાં? તેઓ ખાતા પહેલા તેમના હાથ કેમ ધોતા નથી!”

ફરોશીઓ અને શાસ્ત્રીઓએ ઈસુને કહ્યું, ‘તારા શિષ્યો અમારા મહાન લોકો જે અમારી અગાઉ જીવી ગયા તેઓએ અમને આપેલા નિયમોને અનુસરતા નથી. તારા શિષ્યો જે હાથો ચોખ્ખા નથી તેના વડે તેમનું ખાવાનું ખાય છે. તેઓ આમ શા માટે કરે છે?’

તેઓ મારી ભક્તિ વ્યર્થ કરે છે. જે વસ્તુઓનો તેઓ ઉપદેશ કરે છે તે તો લોકોએ બનાવેલા ફક્ત સાદા નિયમો છ.’

તમે જાણો છો કે ભૂતકાળમાં તમ નિરર્થક જીવન જીવતા હતા. તમારા પહેલા જીવી ગયેલા લોકો પાસેથી તમને આવું જીવન વારસામાં મળ્યું હતું. પરંતુ તે પ્રકારની જીવન પદ્ધતિમાંથી તમને બચાવી લેવામા આવ્યા છે, તમને ખરીદવામાં આવ્યા છે. પરંતુ સોના કે ચાંદી જેવી નાશવંત વસ્તુઓથી નહિ.
