ઇસ્રાએલના નવા રાજાનું નામ શાલ્લૂમ હતું, તેના પિતાનું નામ યાબેશ હતું. તેણે સમરૂનમાં એક માસ રાજ કર્યું. એ રાજા થયો ત્યારે યહૂદામાં ઉઝિઝયા રાજા છેલ્લા 39 વર્ષથી રાજ કરતો હતો.

ત્યારબાદ તેણે શેમેર નામની વ્યકિત પાસેથી સમરૂનની ટેકરી સમરૂન પર્વત લગભગ 68 કિલો ચાંદી આપીને ખરીદી લીધી અને તેના પર તેણે શહેર બંધાવ્યું અને શેમેરના નામ પરથી તેનું નામ સમરૂન પાડયું.

યહૂદાના રાજા અઝાર્યાના રાજયના 38 માં વષેર્ યરોબઆમનો પુત્ર ઝખાર્યા સમરૂનમાં ઇસ્રાએલનો રાજા થયો, અને તેણે 6 મહિના રાજ કર્યું.

એણે જે ધનસંપતિ ગળી ગયો છે તે એણે ઓકી નાખવી પડે છે. દેવ એનાં પેટમાંથી એ કઢાવે છે.

હે દેવ, તમે મારા શત્રુઓને વિનાશની ખાઇમાં ધકેલી દો છો. ખૂની-કપટી પોતાનું અડધું આયુષ્ય પણ નથી ભોગવી શકતાં. પરંતુ મારા રક્ષણ માટે તો હું તમારા પર ભરોસો રાખીશ.

ગુનાથી ભરેલા દેશમાં તેના રાજકર્તાઓ વારંવાર બદલાય છે. પણ બુદ્ધિમાન તથા જ્ઞાની રાજકર્તા હેઠળ તે દીર્ઘકાળ પર્યંત સ્થિરતા અનુભવે છે.
