1 Samuel 11

1 આમ્મોનના રાજા નાહાશ યાબેશ ગિલયાદ ઉપર ચડાઈ કરવા આવ્યો અને તેની સૈનાથી શહેર પર ઘેરો ઘાલ્યો. યાબેશના લોકોએ નાહાશને કહ્યું, “અમાંરી સાથે સંધિ કરો અને અમે તમાંરા સેવકો બનશું.”

2 એટલે નાહાશે કહ્યું, “હું એક જ શરતે તમાંરી સાથે સંધિ કરું; હું તમાંરી બધાની જમણી આંખ કોતરી કાઢું અને સમગ્ર ઇસ્રાએલીની નામોશી કરું.”

3 પછી યાબેશના આગેવાનોએ કહ્યું, “તમે અમને ઇસ્રાએલના બધા લોકોને સંદેશવાહકો મોકલવાને માંટે એક અઠવાડિયું આપો. જો કોઈ અમાંરી મદદ કરવા ન આવે, તો અમે તમાંરે તાબે થઈશું.”

4 પછી કાસદોએ શાઉલના ગિબયાહમાં આવીને લોકોને આ સમાંચાર કહ્યા; ત્યારે બધા લોકો મોટે સાદે આક્રંદ કરવા લાગ્યા.

5 એ જ વખતે શાઉલ ખેતરમાંથી બળદો લઈને ગામમાં આવતો હતો. તેણે પૂછયું, “શું થયું છે? બધા કેમ રડે છે?”તેમણે તેને યાબેશના માંણસોએ કહેલી વાત કહી સંભળાવી.

6 શાઉલે એ વાત સાંભળી, ત્યારે શાઉલમાં દેવનો આત્માં મહાશકિત સહિત આવ્યો, અને તેનો ક્રોધ ભભૂકી ઊઠયો.

7 તેણે બળદની એક જોડ લઈને તેમને કાપી કાપીને ટૂકડા કરી નાખ્યા. અને એ ટૂકડા સાથે સમગ્ર ઇસ્રાએલમાં કાસદો મોકલી તેણે એવો સંદેશો કહેવડાવ્યો કે, જે કોઈ શાઉલ તથા શમુએલની પાછળ નહિ આવે તેના બળદના આ હાલ થશે.”એટલે લોકોને યહોવાનો ભય લાગ્યો, ને એક મતે તેઓ સૌ નીકળી પડયા.

8 પછી શાઉલેે બેઝેકમાં માંણસો ભેગા કર્યા; ઇસ્રાએલમાંથી લગભગ 3,00,000 માંણસો હતા અને યહુદામાંથી 30,000 માંણસો હતા.

9 અને જે કાસદો આવ્યા હતા તેમને તેઓએ કહ્યું કે, તમે યાબેશ-ગિલયાદના માંણસોને કહો, “આવતી કાલે સૂરજ માંથે આવે ત્યાં સુધીમાં તમાંરો છૂટકારો થયો હશે.”આ સંદેશો સાંભળીને યાબેશના લોકોના આનંદનો પાર ન રહ્યો તેમણે નાહાશને કહ્યું,

10 “આવતી કાલે અમે તમાંરે તાબે થઈશું અને તમને જે યોગ્ય લાગે તે કરજો.”

11 બીજે દિવસે સવારે શાઉલે લશ્કરને ત્રણ ટુકડીમાં વહેંચી નાખ્યું. અને પરોઢ થતાં તેઓ દુશ્મનની છાવણીમાં ધસી ગયા અને બપોર થતાં સુધી આમ્મોનીઓની હત્યા કરી. જે લોકો બચી ગયા તેઓ એવા તો વેરવિખેર થઈ ગયા કે, બે જણ પણ ભેગા ન રહ્યા.

12 પછી લોકોએ શમુએલને કહ્યું, “કોણ હતાં એ માંણસો જેણે પુછયું કે, ‘શાઉલ આપણા પર રાજા તરીકે રાજ કરશે? એ લોકોને અમાંરી પાસે લાવો અને અમે તેમનો સંહાર કરીએ.”

13 પરંતુ શાઉલે કહ્યું, “આજે કોઈનો પ્રાણ લેવાનો નથી. કારણ, આજે યહોવાએ ઇસ્રાએલને વિજય અપાવ્યો છે.”

14 પછી શમુએલે લોકોને કહ્યું, “ચાલો, આપણે ગિલ્ગાલ જઈને ત્યાં શાઉલને ફરી વાર રાજા જાહેર કરીએ.”

15 આથી તેઓ બધા ગિલ્ગાલ ગયા, અને ત્યાં યહોવા સમક્ષ શાઉલને પોતાના રાજા જાહેર કર્યો. તેઓએ યહોવાને શાંત્યર્પણો અર્પણ કર્યા; શાઉલે તથા ઇસ્રાએલના સર્વ પ્રજાજનોએ મોટો ઉત્સવ કર્યો.

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.

14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.

4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.

5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
