எகிப்து தேசத்திலும் கானான் தேசத்திலுமுள்ள பணம் செலவழிந்தபோது, எகிப்தியர் எல்லாரும் யோசேப்பினிடத்தில் வந்து எங்களுக்கு ஆகாரம் தாரும்; பணம் இல்லை, அதினால் நாங்கள் உமது சமுகத்தில் சாகவேண்டுமோ என்றார்கள்

கொஞ்ச காலத்தில் எகிப்திலும் கானானிலும் உள்ள ஜனங்களிடம் தானியம் வாங்கப் பணம் இல்லை. தம்மிடம் இருந்த பணத்தை ஏற்கெனவே தானியம் வாங்குவதில் செலவழித்திருந்தார்கள். எனவே அவர்கள் யோசேப்பிடம் சென்று, “தயவு செய்து தானியம் கொடுங்கள். எங்கள் பணம் தீர்ந்துவிட்டது. நாங்கள் உணவு உண்ணாவிட்டால் உங்கள் முன்னாலேயே மரித்துவிடுவோம்” என்று வேண்டினார்கள்.
