யோனத்தான் தாவீதைத் தன் ஆத்துமாவைப் போலச் சிநேகித்ததினால், அவனும் இவனும் உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணிக் கொண்டார்கள்.

அவர்கள் இருவரும் கர்த்தருக்கு முன்பாக உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணினபின்பு, தாவீது காட்டில் இருந்துவிட்டான்; யோனத்தானோ தன் வீட்டிற்குப் போனான்.

அப்சலோம் யோவாபைப் பார்த்து: இதோ, நான் ஏன் கேசூரிலிருந்து வந்தேன்; நான் அங்கே இருந்துவிட்டால் நலம் என்று ராஜாவுக்குச் சொல்லும்படி உம்மை ராஜாவினிடத்தில் அனுப்புவதற்காக உம்மை இங்கே வரும்படி அழைப்பித்தேன், இப்போதும் நான் ராஜாவின்முகத்தைப் பார்க்கட்டும்; என்மேல் குற்றமிருந்தால் அவர் என்னைக் கொன்றுபோடட்டும் என்றான்.

இப்படி யோனத்தான் தாவீதின் குடும்பத்தோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணி, தாவீதுடைய சத்துருக்களின் கையிலே கர்த்தர் கணக்குக் கேட்பாராக என்று சொல்லி,

இப்பொழுதும் நீங்களும் என் எஜமானுக்குத் தயையும் உண்மையும் உடையவர்களாய் நடக்க மனதுள்ளவர்களானால், எனக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள்; இல்லையென்றால் அதையும் எனக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள், அப்பொழுது நான் வலது புறத்தையாகிலும் இடதுபுறத்தையாகிலும் நோக்கிப் போவேன் என்றான்.

இஸ்ரவேல் மரணமடையும் காலம் சமீபித்தது. அப்பொழுது அவன் தன் குமாரனாகிய யோசேப்பை வரவழைத்து, அவனை நோக்கி: என்மேல் உனக்குத் தயவுண்டானால், உன் கையை என் தொடையின்கீழ் வைத்து என்மேல் பட்சமும் உண்மையுமுள்ளவனாயிரு; என்னை எகிப்திலே அடக்கம்பண்ணாதிருப்பாயாக.

கிருபையும் சத்தியமும் உன்னைவிட்டு விலகாதிருப்பதாக; நீ அவைகளை உன் கழுத்திலே பூண்டு, அவைகளை உன் இருதயமாகிய பலகையில் எழுதிக்கொள்.

நான் அநியாயஞ்செய்து, மரணத்துக்குப் பாத்திரமானது ஏதாகிலும் நடப்பித்ததுண்டானால் நான் சாகாதபடிக்கு மனுகேட்கமாட்டேன். இவர்கள் என்மேல் சாட்டுகிற குற்றங்கள் முற்றிலும் அபத்தமானால், அவர்களுக்குத் தயவுபண்ணும்பொருட்டு ஒருவரும் என்னை அவர்களுக்கு ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கலாகாது. இராயருக்கு அபயமிடுகிறேன் என்றான்.
